Illustration for the article Payroll Calculation in 2026: From Gross to Net Salary Explained

How gross salary becomes net take-home pay, how much an employee actually costs a company, and which tax reliefs every employee can claim.

Employee and Employer Contributions

Social security, health insurance contributions, and income tax advances are deducted from the salary. In addition, the employer pays its own share of insurance contributions, meaning the actual employment cost is significantly higher than the gross wage.

Tax Reliefs and Child Tax Credits

The basic taxpayer relief is claimed based on a signed taxpayer declaration (prohlášení poplatníka). The child tax relief can take the form of a tax bonus—extra cash paid directly to the employee.

Common Mistakes in Payroll Administration

Late employee registration, incorrectly configured deductions, or unaccounted sick leave. Each of these leads to corrections, back payments, and awkward explanations to employees.
