Asset Depreciation in Practice: How to Legally Optimise Your Tax Base
· 3 min read

Straight-line, accelerated or extraordinary depreciation? The right choice can defer tens of thousands of Czech korunas in tax to the years when you need it most.
When to depreciate assets
Tangible assets exceeding the statutory acquisition cost threshold cannot be expensed immediately as a one-off cost. They are written off gradually according to the statutory depreciation group into which they are classified.
Straight-line versus accelerated depreciation
Accelerated depreciation front-loads higher expenses into the initial years, making it ideal for profitable companies. Conversely, straight-line depreciation stabilises the tax base for businesses that are still ramping up.
Depreciation as a tax planning tool
Tax depreciation can also be suspended in any given tax year. For clients reporting a tax loss, this step preserves tax-deductible expenses for future years when they will actually be needed.
