VAT Registration in Czechia: Mandatory Thresholds and Voluntary Benefits
· 3 min read

Exceeding the turnover threshold, cross-border services, and voluntary registration. We explain when you must become a VAT payer and when it is financially beneficial to register voluntarily.
Mandatory Registration Upon Exceeding Turnover
The obligation arises once you exceed the statutory turnover threshold over 12 consecutive calendar months. You must submit your registration application to Finanční správa (Czech Tax Office) within 10 days of the end of the month in which you exceeded the limit.
Identified Person versus Full VAT Payer
Purchasing online advertising from a foreign platform? This makes you an identified person (identifikovaná osoba) without obliging you to charge and remit VAT on domestic supplies. The distinction between these two statuses significantly alters your administrative workload.
When Voluntary Registration Is Advantageous
If you supply goods or services predominantly to VAT-registered businesses or are planning significant investments with large input tax deductions, voluntary registration provides immediate savings. Conversely, when selling to end consumers (B2C), it effectively raises your prices by the relevant VAT rate.
